Plans have been unveiled for an arboretum within the Burtree Garden Village development in Darlington, aiming to enrich the community with accessible green spaces
The first phase, approved earlier this year, includes 750 homes, with the entire project set to deliver approximately 2,000 residences over the next two decades. In addition to housing, the development will feature a new school, community centre, pub, and health facilities.
The proposed arboretum, a collaborative effort by Hellens Group and Homes England, is designed to offer residents a diverse range of tree species, seasonal gardens, and a foraging trail. A central raised mound with a footpath leading to a scenic viewpoint will provide panoramic views of the surrounding area.
Gavin Cordwell-Smith, Chief Executive of Hellens Group, emphasised the project’s commitment to creating a sustainable community that prioritises both people and the environment. He stated, “The arboretum will play a pivotal role in delivering on our vision of a green, healthy, and inclusive village where residents can enjoy high-quality green spaces on their doorstep.”
Nearly half of the Burtree Garden Village site is dedicated to green spaces, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability. The arboretum is a key component of this strategy, aiming to link nature with daily life. By reusing site materials and planting a diverse range of native and ornamental trees, the development seeks to promote biodiversity, well-being, and community interaction.
This initiative represents a significant step towards creating a thriving, sustainable community in Darlington, offering residents a harmonious blend of modern living and natural beauty.
