Foundation Art Prize offering £250 prize for young creatives launched

A competition to celebrate the talents of young creatives has been launched by The Northern School of Art.

The Foundation Art Prize is inviting entries in all types of media from 16–18-year-old creatives working in any discipline living in the North East and Yorkshire and Humber regions.

Overseen by the UAL Foundation Diploma in Art & Design course based at the School’s Middlesbrough campus, the prize is offering a cash prize of £250 for the winner with two runners up prizes of £50 vouchers for creative materials.

The winner and shortlisted candidates may also be invited to exhibit their work at the School’s prestigious Summer Show at its campus in Newport Road, Middlesbrough.

The competition runs until midnight on Wednesday 1 May 2024. Submissions are open to North East and Yorkshire and Humber-based creatives aged 16 to 18 years old and submissions from a wide range of artistic and creative areas are welcome.

Details of how to enter along with full terms and conditions can be found on The Northern School of Art’s website.

To reflect the individualism of the Foundation course, the programme’s staff are looking for a wide diversity of work to be submitted for The Foundation Art Prize: from the wild and wonderful, to the intricate and the beautiful – the competition organisers are looking forward to seeing it.

More Information
The UAL Foundation Diploma at The Northern School of Art’s Middlesbrough campus offers an exciting and confidence building, year-long course that is free of charge for under 19s. Designed to help creative students discover their arts discipline, it equips students with the skills and standard to apply and thrive at degree level.

Foundation students initially spend 6 – 8 weeks trying out all the different art and design areas, working with a multi-disciplinary approach to extend their creative practice in experimental and innovative ways. The course is carefully designed to immerse students in a range of exploratory activities which develop skills, introduce new techniques, approaches and, most importantly, new ways of seeing the world.

Students are supported to develop high levels of critical thinking and creative interpretation and gain an understanding of how to work with creatives across all disciplines. The intensive programme of drawing includes life drawing and students also have the opportunity to explore a wide range of specialist techniques including ceramics, painting, photography, screen printing, animation and illustration.
