Two working pieces of Darlington’s railway story will open their doors for free on 5 and 6 September as Hopetown’s monthly Weekend returns.
Visitors can explore Darlington Locomotive Works and the 1861 Shed between 10am and 3pm, see locomotives under restoration and meet the volunteers and organisations involved in preserving and building railway history.
Saturday is designed as the family day, with railway-themed activities and hands-on ways to explore the site. Sunday is aimed more closely at railway and engineering enthusiasts, although the wider heritage experiences remain open to everyone.
Hopetown says visitors can see restoration work, learn more about locomotive engineering and find out how local railway groups contribute to the site. The Heritage Weekends are delivered with partners including the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, the P2 Class Locomotive Company, Darlington Railway Preservation Society and the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group.
Entry is free, although donations are welcomed. A separate free ticket is needed for each day if visitors want to attend both Saturday and Sunday.
