People in Darlington and Middlesbrough have new opportunities to learn British Sign Language this autumn, with courses beginning in September through the Deaf Empowerment Network.

Healthwatch Darlington has published details of the programme, which includes BSL Level 1 in Darlington and Level 1 in Middlesbrough, alongside a Middlesbrough course aimed at Children of Deaf Adults.

The Darlington Level 1 course begins on Thursday 10 September and runs from 6pm to 8pm. The published course poster lists a cost of £475, including a £75 deposit and exam fees, with payment by instalments available. The Darlington venue is still to be confirmed.

The programme says teaching is delivered by qualified Deaf tutors, with accredited Signature courses and support through Google Classroom or WhatsApp.

Learning BSL can make workplaces, services and everyday conversations more accessible, while giving hearing learners a better understanding of Deaf language and culture.

Healthwatch Darlington’s course notice also lists Level 1, 2 and 3 opportunities elsewhere in the North East. Anyone interested should check the current course information before booking, particularly as individual locations and availability may change.
