Darlington residents have until Sunday 6 December to comment on where people should vote at the May 2027 local elections, with the council specifically seeking about access for disabled electors.

The interim review began on 12 October after the Local Government Boundary Commission for England published a new pattern for the borough. Darlington Borough Council must now make sure its polling districts fit those boundaries and decide which buildings are the best practical places for voters to use.

Why the map is changing

Polling districts are the smaller areas used to organise elections within council wards. A polling place is the building or location chosen for voting, while the polling station is the room or area inside it where ballots are cast. The review covers all three.

The boundary commission’s final recommendations would give Darlington 41 councillors, nine fewer than under the existing arrangements. They propose 19 wards: five represented by three councillors, 12 by two councillors and two by one councillor. Most ward boundaries would change, although the recommendations still need approval before becoming law.

That wider boundary work explains why the council is looking again at its voting arrangements now. Its website includes tables of the existing districts and venues, followed by an initial draft for May 2027. The lists range from schools, libraries and community centres in the urban area to village halls and other shared buildings in surrounding communities.

Access is part of the test

The council says polling places should be convenient within each district and accessible to everyone, particularly disabled people. It is contacting community groups, organisations, head teachers and elected representatives, and is inviting people with experience of any kind of disability access to contribute.

Anyone entitled to vote in Darlington can also respond. The council is asking people to flag problems with current polling stations and alternative venues where they believe another building would work better. Useful evidence could include difficulties entering or moving around a site, transport and parking barriers, or practical reasons why a venue is hard to .

The published proposals are not final decisions. The current districts and polling places are intended to remain in use until the May 2027 local elections, while the draft arrangements show what the council is considering for that election and beyond.

How to take part

Comments can be sent through the contact details on the council’s review page or in writing to the Returning Officer, Elections Team, Room 310, Town Hall, Feethams, Darlington, DL1 5QT. Submissions must arrive no later than 6 December.

Council officers plan to consider responses and the Returning Officers’ evidence between 7 and 22 December. Final proposals are due to go before the full council on 28 January 2027. The boundary commission says the new ward arrangements are intended to apply at the 6 May 2027 elections, once the required parliamentary order has been made.

People responding should check the council’s tables for their present polling district and the proposed 2027 arrangement. The review is about the suitability and location of polling places, not support for a political party or candidate.
