Adult education is often measured in qualifications, but in Redcar and Cleveland the council is also highlighting something harder to put on a certificate: confidence.
Simon Bushaway, a lead tutor with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Adult Learning Service, has been featured in a new behind-the-scenes look at the people helping residents return to learning, develop skills and take their next step.

The service offers adult education across areas including English, maths, digital skills and English for speakers of other languages, alongside training linked to employment. In 2025 it was rated Good by after a period of rapid improvement.
Simon’s profile brings the focus back to the day-to-day work behind those courses: creating an environment where adults can ask questions, rebuild confidence and see learning as something they can still make their own.
