Hartlepool Art Gallery is opening its doors for a new series of life drawing evenings this autumn, with tickets kept at just £1.
The gallery is working with The Marra Project on four Wednesday sessions, beginning on 16 September and continuing on 21 October, 18 November and 16 December. Each runs from 7pm to 8.30pm.
Rather than treating the gallery collection as background scenery, each session will take inspiration from figures already found in Hartlepool’s artworks. Participants will draw from a live in poses that echo pieces in the collection, moving between the gallery’s history and their own response on the page.
Materials are provided, although people can bring their own. The sessions are open to beginners as well as people with more life drawing experience.
The Marra Project was founded by artist Emory Southwick and creates inclusive, alcohol-free spaces where people can meet and make things together. Its name comes from the North East pitmatic word “marra”, meaning someone who has your back.
That approach carries into the Hartlepool sessions: relaxed, affordable and designed to make trying life drawing feel less intimidating.
The first session takes place at Hartlepool Art Gallery, Church Square, on Wednesday 16 September from 7pm to 8.30pm. Tickets cost £1.
