Darlington Market Hall will host a free afternoon of Diwali music, dance, food and hands-on crafts on Friday 30 October, bringing the Festival of Lights into the town centre.
Darlington Borough Council says the celebration will run from 3pm to 7pm and visitors can drop in rather than book. The programme is designed for all ages and brings makers, performers and food businesses together under one roof.
Crafts, dance and food in the Market Hall
Families will be able to make mini lanterns and Diwali hand designs with Miss Print, create mandala patterns with Jammi Arts and try further craft activities led by Scrapstore Studio. A selfie backdrop will also be available during the afternoon.
Navrang Arts will bring Bollywood dance to the programme, while NE4 DJs will provide music and entertainment. Rumi’s Kitchen is due to offer food samples. The council has not published a detailed running order, so visitors should expect a drop-in event rather than a fixed sequence of performances.
A festival shared across communities
Diwali is a major festival in Hindu communities and is also observed by Sikhs and Jains around the world. Traditions and religious meanings vary, but light is a central theme, often knowledge, renewal and the triumph of light over darkness.
That makes the Market Hall programme a useful opportunity for people who already celebrate Diwali and for neighbours who want to learn through music, making and conversation. The event is not presented as a religious service. It is a public cultural celebration, free to enter and open to everyone.
For Darlington, the location matters. Staging the afternoon inside a familiar town-centre venue, with no ticket price and no advance booking, removes some practical barriers for people trying a cultural event for the first time. It also gives the participating artists and organisations a chance to meet audiences beyond their usual networks.
Planning a visit
The event takes place at Darlington Market Hall and Open Market in the town centre. The council’s detailed event page lists the time as 3pm to 7pm. An Enjoy Darlington listing and a Primary Times entry both show a 4pm start, so anyone arranging travel around a particular activity should check the council page again before setting off.
Public toilets are available in the Market Hall, Cornmill Shopping Centre and Dolphin Centre, where accessible toilets are also available. The council notes that some visitors may find ear defenders helpful at public events. Taxi drop-off is available at Market Square, cycle parking can be found nearby, and town-centre bus stops are served by several routes.
Darlington railway station is listed as about 730 metres from the venue. Drivers can use the council’s town-centre parking information to plan their visit.
What is confirmed and what is not
The organisers have confirmed the date, venue, free entry and the named programme contributors. They have not published capacity information, individual performance times or booking arrangements, and no contact telephone number or event email is listed. The practical starting point is therefore the council’s Diwali event page, which should carry any later changes.
