In recognition of University Day, Teesside University has presented an honorary 'dogtorate' to Brengle, a golden retriever who regularly visits the campus. Brengle accompanies his owner, Captain Naomi Kelly, a Middlesbrough Salvation Army church leader, as part of the university's faith and reflection service.

The dog has been recognised for his role in reducing student stress and providing reassurance. During his time on campus, Brengle has offered support to students following bereavement and exam periods, helping them feel more comfortable engaging with university support services.

Captain Kelly noted that many students report feeling their mental health improve after spending time with Brengle. The dog is known for his calm presence, often helping students transition from a state of stress to feeling relaxed.

Sarah Bishop, assistant director of student and library services, stated that Brengle is a valuable part of the university’s broader mental health and support offerings. The award was presented to highlight the importance of the university’s commitment to student welfare.
