Older people looking for somewhere welcoming to spend time with others have three different Age UK Teesside sessions to choose from in Middlesbrough this September.

The charity’s WISE programme has a Community Social at MINA Cafe on 11 September, a Drop-In at Grove Hill Hub on 18 September and a Sing-a-long at Woodside Hub on 25 September.

WISE stands for wellbeing, isolation, social and . It sits within Age UK Teesside’s wider Phoenix Project, an established programme designed to give older people a welcoming social environment where they can take part as much or as little as they want.

Connection without pressure

The Phoenix Project includes activities such as carpet bowls, craft groups, chair-based exercise, walking groups and social events. Age UK Teesside says the priorities are emotional wellbeing, good health and social inclusion.

The useful bit is that the programme is not built around one type of person or one idea of what being social should look like. Someone might want a busy community social, a quieter drop-in or simply an hour singing familiar songs with other people.

The September dates are followed by another Community Social on 9 October, a Wellbeing Drop-In on 16 October and a Sing-a-long on 23 October.

The Phoenix Project is funded by Middlesbrough Council. Age UK Teesside says people can contact the team on 01642 805500 for more information about the programme and bookings.
