Teesside University students have been using their artistic skills to support the Unicorn Centre, a Middlesbrough facility that provides horse riding opportunities for disabled children and adults. The volunteers painted large-scale props, including dragons, unicorns, and knights, for the centre’s upcoming indoor arena events.
The project was organised through the university’s Volun-tees scheme, which links students and staff with community volunteering opportunities. The props created by the students will be used for the centre’s Easter celebrations, which include pony rides.
Pat White, of the Unicorn Centre, stated that the students spent three afternoons working on the decorations. The volunteers also had the opportunity to tour the facilities and meet the horses, including a dressage simulator named Blackberry.
The student volunteers, who included participants from illustration and visual communication courses, described the experience as a way to contribute to a local cause while gaining creative work experience. The centre plans to involve student volunteers again for future events, including a Christmas-themed activity.
