Teesside Airport has been selected as a pilot site to test -powered vehicles as part of a £2.5 million project. The will see several commercial and ground support vehicles, including an aircraft towing tug, converted to run on 100% hydrogen fuel.
The trial involves collaboration with vehicle manufacturer Toyota, which is providing two Mirai fuel cell cars and a forklift truck. Additionally, emergency services, including Cleveland Police and NHS patient support units, will test hydrogen vehicles to evaluate their efficiency and range.
This project forms part of the wider Hydrogen Transport Hub announced for the Tees Valley, which focuses on , development, and testing for various transport modes including lorries, buses, and trains. Future trials will also include hydrogen-powered delivery vans operated in with major supermarkets.
Element Energy is also coordinating a trial with Sainsbury’s to test a hydrogen-powered HGV. The project seeks to that fuel cell technology can provide faster refueling times and longer range than current battery-electric alternatives for heavy-duty applications.
