CPI awarded £4million grant to create state-of-the-art bio-manufacturing site

A £4 million investment has been awarded to the Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) to establish a centre of excellence in bio-manufacturing at the Wilton Centre in Redcar. The funding will be used to refurbish laboratories and install advanced technical equipment, allowing the centre to help businesses develop healthier and more sustainable food products.

The project is expected to create and safeguard 41 jobs within the region. This expansion strengthens the existing capabilities of CPI, which also operates a facility in Darlington near Teesside University’s National Horizons Centre.

The investment aims to provide a unique resource for companies to test new food systems and bio-manufacturing technologies. Proponents of the scheme suggest that by improving food production processes, the centre will contribute to broader environmental and health goals while attracting further industrial investment to the Tees Valley.

The funding was provided by the Tees Valley Mayor and Combined Authority Cabinet as part of a wider strategy to support the biosciences and healthcare sector.
