A haircut is an ordinary part of life for plenty of people. For others, the cost, noise or pace of a busy salon can make it surprisingly difficult.

Redcar & Cleveland Voluntary Development Agency has launched a free monthly community haircut service from its Palace Hub base on Redcar seafront, designed to make that everyday bit of self-care easier to access.

The service is open to pensioners, people getting ready for a job interview, people who find busy salons overwhelming and anyone who may benefit from a quieter one-to-one appointment. RCVDA says the hairdresser delivering the sessions is also an autism specialist.

Appointments take place in the organisation’s reception room, with the service running on the second Thursday of each month between 10am and 3pm. Booking is required.

It is a small idea, but a practical one. A haircut before an interview can help somebody feel more prepared, while a quieter environment can remove a barrier for people who might otherwise avoid salons altogether.

RCVDA supports voluntary, community and organisations across Redcar and Cleveland and is based at the Palace Hub on the Esplanade.
