Teesside University students are being offered four practical volunteering days this autumn, supporting a Tees Valley multibank, a community orchard, a charity clothing sale and Teesside Hospice’s Superstore.

The university’s Volun-tees programme has set out opportunities on 14 and 21 October, followed by two more on 12 and 19 November. The sessions range from packing household essentials for local families to pressing apples and preparing a charity shop for Christmas.

Sorting essentials at The Junction Multibank

The first session takes place at The Junction Multibank on Wednesday 14 October from 10am to 3pm. Volunteers will work with the warehouse team to sort stock, pick goods from order forms and pack items ready for collection. They may also organise stock and help keep the working area safe and tidy.

The Multibank receives surplus goods from businesses and distributes them through charities, schools, social workers and community organisations rather than handing them directly to individuals. Items can include clothing, bedding, hygiene products, school uniforms, kitchenware and other household essentials. The Junction’s website currently reports that the service has distributed 4,431,881 items through 1,522 partners, figures which may continue to change as the project works across the region.

The Middlesbrough warehouse is part of a that links business surplus with organisations already supporting people in hardship. That arrangement matters because the goods are channelled through trusted local services, while usable products are diverted from waste. Volunteers on 14 October will be working behind that distribution system rather than meeting recipients directly.

Apples, affordable clothes and hospice support

A second session on Wednesday 21 October, from 9.30am to 1.30pm, moves outdoors. Working with Apple A Day and Middlesbrough Environment City, also known as Nine Yards, volunteers will help harvest apples in a community orchard and press them into fresh juice. It is a short, hands-on job tied to the local growing season, with the fruit put to use rather than left to fall.

On Thursday 12 November, volunteers can support a pop-up clothing sale running from 9am to 3pm. Every item will cost £1 and the money raised will go to Diabetes UK. The university listing does not give a fundraising target, so the value of the day will depend on the stock sold and the number of people who take part.

The final listed session is at the Teesside Hospice Superstore on Thursday 19 November, from 9.15am to 2.30pm. Volunteers will help decorate the store for Christmas. It is the lightest task in the programme, but it supports a shop whose trading contributes to the hospice’s work.

Volunteering with a clear job to do

Volun-tees is Teesside University’s dedicated volunteering programme. It connects students with opportunities in voluntary and community organisations, while giving them experience that can be recorded alongside their . These four sessions are structured around defined jobs and time slots, which means students can see what they are committing to before they sign up.

Separate registration links for all four dates are available through the university’s October and November volunteering listing. Anyone interested should check the live booking page for availability and any practical instructions before travelling, as places or arrangements may change.
