Park Drive cricket ground is turning the bank holiday weekend into two days of local sport, music and fundraising for Alice House Hospice.

On Sunday 30 August, cricketers will gather for the annual double wicket competition held in memory of Park Drive club figure Ian Jackson. This year marks the tenth anniversary of his death at the age of 47.

The following day, Bank Holiday Monday 31 August, Hartlepool Cricket Club’s over-40s football team will swap boots for bats to face the club’s over-40s cricket team in a 20-over match for the Danny Shurmer/James Parkinson Memorial Trophy.

Both events are expected to begin around midday. Admission is free, with food, a raffle, an auction of sporting memorabilia and local DJ Les Watts. Brad Frank will perform on both days, joined by local band Guess on Sunday and singer Lauren Chiverton on Monday.

The weekend is built around remembrance, but it also has a practical purpose. Money raised will go to Alice House Hospice, which provides specialist care and support to people affected by life-limiting illness and bereavement across Hartlepool, the Tees Valley and East Durham.

The hospice says it needs more than £1 million in charitable donations each year towards its running costs, making community fundraisers such as Park Drive an important part of keeping local care available.

There is also a Player of the Match award in memory of Park Drive stalwart John Rae, who died earlier this year.
