Middlesbrough has set out a new vision for its town centre, with proposals ranging from a new theatre and hotel to fresh public spaces and thousands of new homes.

The has been developed by a Place Leaders bringing together the council, Teesside University, Middlesbrough College, Middlesbrough Football Club and other major local organisations. A involving around 1,300 young people, parents and carers also helped shape the priorities.

Among the ideas are a theatre on the Civic Centre site, the transformation of Gurney House into a hotel and new urban spaces created where ageing retail or office buildings no longer have a future. Housing growth in Middlehaven and Gresham is also central to the plan.

The council says 15 projects feature in its updated Investment Prospectus, although they are at different stages and will depend on a mix of private investment and public funding. The strategy is due to be considered by the council’s Executive on 2 September.
