A long-term regeneration strategy for Middlesbrough includes more than 2,000 homes at Middlehaven, a proposed major theatre, new public spaces and plans to make the town centre more attractive to young people.

Middlesbrough has set out an ambitious long-term vision for its town centre, bringing together new homes, cultural venues, public spaces and transport improvements.

The proposals form part of a wider Place that the council’s executive is due to consider. Among the biggest ideas is Capital & Centric’s plan for a new community of more than 2,000 homes at Middlehaven, built on around the Old Town Hall.

The first phase is in early design work and has £3.6 million of Towns Fund backing. The strategy also includes ambitions for a major new theatre on the Civic Centre site, a hotel at Gurney House, new urban spaces and a cultural department store concept called the House of Art.

Transport plans include improved bus stops and a new taxi hub, while the wider prospectus also identifies opportunities for more housing at Newham Hall and an Academic Centre of Excellence for Surgery at James Cook University Hospital.

The plans are still proposals and will depend on funding and future approvals. If backed, the strategy will be used as a for attracting investment and shaping the next phase of Middlesbrough’s .
