A group of Darlington tenants have turned a summer community event into a £1,700 boost for dogs waiting for new homes.
Residents from Branksome Hall Drive joined Darlington Borough Council Housing Services staff Loraine, Linda and Sara on a visit to Dogs Trust Darlington at Sadberge, where they presented the money raised through their recent summer event and fundraising activities.
The group was welcomed by Gordon from Dogs Trust and given a tour of the centre, including the areas used to keep dogs active and mentally stimulated while they wait to be rehomed.
Darlington Borough Council says the centre has 15 specialist enrichment areas designed to encourage play, exploration and positive behaviour. Visitors also heard about measures at the site, including recycled materials and solar panels.
Importantly, the £1,700 donation will remain at the Darlington centre. The council says it will help pay for enrichment activities and contribute towards veterinary costs for dogs in its care.
The visit also gave residents a closer look at the day-to-day work behind animal welfare locally, turning money raised within one Darlington community into practical support for another.
Dogs Trust Darlington also welcomes useful donated items including bedding, towels, duvets and old dog beds, although feather-filled items cannot be accepted.
