Postgraduate students win creative award at decarbonisation event

A team of MSc Chemical Engineering students from Teesside University has won the Most Creative Idea award at a regional Decarbonisation Hackathon.

Six MSc Chemical Engineering students from Teesside University secured the Most Creative Idea award at a recent Hackathon held at Middlesbrough College. The competition brought together student teams from Teesside and Newcastle universities to find cost-effective methods for lowering carbon footprints.

Organised by Worley, SABIC, and the , the event challenged participants to design practical solutions for local industrial decarbonisation. The winning team proposed an application of electrochemistry principles within processes, accounting for technical feasibility, energy storage, and emission reduction.

The successful students included Ashna Basheer, Ansmol John, Minh Nguyen, Jawad Rehman, Kenechukwu Ugonabo, and Sathya Nuwandi Rathnayake Weerasena.

Dr Omar Aboelazayem, Senior Lecturer in Chemical Engineering, praised the students' success. The University has stated its institutional target of achieving by 2030.
