Hundreds of primary pupils learn about college life in careers scheme

Over 300 primary school pupils visited local colleges to explore career paths and further education as part of a new regional careers pilot.

Students in Year 5 and Year 6 from seven schools across Middlesbrough and Redcar & Cleveland participated in a 'College week' programme. The , funded by a £750,000 expansion of the TeesValleyCareers.com scheme, aims to increase awareness of post-16 education options.

During the visits, children engaged with various subjects, including construction trades and tourism, to better understand potential future vocations. Headteachers reported that the experience provided an important opportunity for pupils to raise their aspirations and understand the purpose of .

The programme follows a previous three-million-pound initiative that engaged 100,000 students in regional secondary schools. While this initial pilot for primary-age children reached 330 pupils, organisers noted that some sessions were impacted by coronavirus restrictions.

The project is intended to return next year with a broader scope to support careers education across the entire Tees Valley.
