North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has a new online service for outpatient appointments. The platform, known as Attend Anywhere, allows patients to consult with clinicians via video call using a smartphone, tablet, or computer.
The system was accelerated to help limit hospital footfall during the coronavirus pandemic, though it was part of long-term planning to reduce the need for physical travel. Patients log into a virtual waiting area through the Trust’s website, where they can speak to staff and review reports or X-rays onscreen.
The service is currently available for several departments, including physiotherapy, gastroenterology, and palliative care. Clinicians have noted that while the system is not suitable for initial diagnoses requiring physical examination, it is effective for follow-up appointments and managing long-term conditions.
The Trust has stated that patient confidentiality remains a priority, and consultations are not recorded. By reducing travel, the also aims to lower the carbon footprint of hospital visits and provide greater convenience for those managing work or care commitments.
