Teesside University building wins national social impact award

Teesside University's £13.2 million Student Life Building has been honoured with the RICS Social Impact Education Award 2020. The national prize follows a regional success earlier in the year and recognises schemes that demonstrate significant human, social, and environmental benefits.

Located at the centre of the Middlesbrough campus, the facility was designed to co-locate student support services, including health, wellbeing, and careers advice, into a single hub. The project involved a complete reconfiguration of the university's student-facing services to simplify access and reduce stigma.

Environmental considerations were a priority during the project's construction, resulting in the building achieving a BREEAM Excellent rating and an Energy Performance Certificate A rating.

During construction, the project supported 60 weeks of apprenticeships and 10 weeks of work experience. The building is a key part of the university’s £300 million Campus Masterplan, which is scheduled for completion in 2026.
