A few sheets of card, some pens and a thoughtful message will be doing a little more than filling an afternoon at Teesside University this month.

Students are being invited to take part in a special Welcome Week volunteering activity on 24 September, creating letters, cards, drawings and messages for children living with serious illnesses through the charity Post Pals.

The session is being supported by the university’s Volun-tees team and is designed to be easy to join. Participants do not need to arrive with polished prose or artistic ambitions. A note, a doodle or a colourful card can all become something cheerful dropping through a child’s letterbox.

It is also a neat way of giving Welcome Week a community dimension. Alongside meeting people and settling into university life, students can spend some time making something for somebody they may never meet.

Post Pals supports seriously ill children and their siblings by connecting them with people who friendly post. Teesside University says the Volun-tees team will be available during the activity with ideas and guidance, while Post Pals provides advice on what to write and how to keep messages fun and appropriate.

The event takes place on 24 September. Further details and participation information are available through Teesside University and Volun-tees.
