More than 850 patients at James Cook University Hospital have taken part in a national genetics looking at why some people become much more seriously ill from infections than others.

The hospital’s critical care team is contributing to GENOMICC, which investigates genetic differences linked to severe illness, including sepsis. Participation involves a blood that can be studied alongside information about how a patient responded to infection and .

James Cook has repeatedly been among the study’s strongest recruiting sites, including leading recruitment nationally in June and July this year. The long-term goal is to identify genetic clues that could support better for critically ill patients.
