Darlington swimmers were given a firm return date in January 2024 when the council confirmed that the Dolphin Centre’s main pool would reopen at 6.30am on Friday, 26 January.

The announcement followed a lengthy period of essential maintenance in the centre’s more than 40-year-old pool hall. Work was still continuing around the toddler pool and walkway, so temporary access arrangements were due to be signposted when the main pool reopened.

A phased return, not the end of the job

The main pool date did not mean every part of the complex would be available immediately. The toddler pool, slides and poolside showers were to remain closed, with those facilities expected to return later in the spring.

That distinction was important for families planning a visit. Lane and general swimming could resume in the main pool, but visitors looking for the toddler area or slides still needed to wait for a later update.

The closure formed part of a wider £3.9 million improvement programme at the Dolphin Centre between 2020 and 2024. Other investment over that period included a bowling alley, new soft play, gym refurbishment and changes to the changing facilities.

Work beneath the tiles

When old tiles were removed from the main pool, contractors found cracking in the concrete and failure around movement-joint waterproofing. Chlorinated water had leaked into the structure and damaged steel reinforcement, leading to more detailed and repair.

The programme included repairing cracks in the pool walls, realigning movement joints, replacing input pipes, improving waterproofing and protecting exposed structural steel from corrosion. Render was also used to correct alignment before the pool was retiled.

Councillor Matthew Roche, then the council’s for health and housing, thanked customers for their patience and said the investment was intended to keep a well-used Darlington pool available for years to come.

The 26 January reopening was therefore a meaningful milestone rather than a cosmetic refresh. It returned the main body of water to public use while the rest of the improvement work continued in stages.

At the time of the announcement, swimmers were directed to the Dolphin Centre’s published pool programme for session times and were advised to follow the temporary signs through the building.
