A monthly coffee morning built around Darlington’s railway community is continuing through the autumn, ten years after a simple idea about conversation and connection first brought the group together.

Hopetown Darlington’s Railway Coffee Morning is open to former railway employees and other men with an with the railways in Darlington and the surrounding area. It meets on the final Thursday of the month from 11am to noon in the Clocktower Café at the Goods Shed.

The group is informal. People can talk about their railway years, what is happening in their lives now, or simply sit with people who share a familiar bit of local history. Hopetown says the sessions are particularly intended to offer company to men who may be dealing with isolation, depression or anxiety.

That modest format has lasted. In April, the group marked its tenth anniversary at Darlington Locomotive Works, surrounded by Tornado and the still-under-construction Prince of Wales locomotive. Hopetown says the coffee morning began with Collections and Manager Alison Grange and has grown into a decade of friendships as well as railway reminiscence.

The remaining 2026 dates are 24 September, 29 October and 26 November. There is no charge and no need to book. Hopetown also throws in the first drink, which feels appropriately unfussy for an event whose main ingredient is having somebody to talk to.

Current dates and practical details are available from Hopetown Darlington. The group’s tenth-anniversary story can also be read on Hopetown’s website, and Darlington Borough Council lists the same monthly programme.
