A project offering expert guidance to help our small businesses shine online has been launched to take Tees Valley firms to the next level.
The new Digital Marketing Transformer will help small visitor economy businesses boost their online presence, attract more visitors and improve sales.
With grants of between £500 and £1,000 available to support digital improvements, the Transformer aims to make marketing simpler, more effective and less time consuming so venues and businesses can strengthen online visibility and attract more visitors.
It will bring together leading marketing specialists with extensive knowledge of the visitor economy to provide one-to-one support for businesses.
The Transformer is open to businesses with one to five staff in the visitor sector – which can include firms in accommodation or food and drink, visitor attractions, recreation or activity providers, cultural venues and event venues.
Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “We need to back small businesses and give them as many tools as possible to succeed in a competitive market, where you now often need a presence online.
“Our high streets are powered by hardworking independents who deserve every chance to thrive – and we want to give them the backing to access the benefits of the hundreds of thousands of visitors we attract Teesside, Darlington and Hartlepool ever year.
“Not only will this get the name of our brilliant local businesses out there but will also show more of the world what our region has to offer.”
The Transformer will begin by carrying out a detailed digital marketing audit to understand each business’s current strengths and opportunities.
This will ensure there’s a bespoke plan in place to make the biggest possible impact for each business. This could include help with social media strategies and branding, to improving Google visibility and creating compelling content.
Practical training and mentoring will also help firms embed what they learn and feel more assured in their marketing.
businesses can also apply for capital grants to upgrade their digital presence which could be through photography, new booking systems, digital hardware, or software to improve their marketing.
Cllr Pamela Hargreaves, Leader of Hartlepool Borough Council and for Creative Place, said: “This project will give our tourism businesses the confidence and support they need to stand out online and attract more visitors.
“We’re home to unique character and experiences and this Transformer will help our businesses show that to the wider world. It’s another step toward growing our economy and promoting some of the great stories they have to tell.”
Businesses applying must be based in the Tees Valley and be able to commit at least two full days in January or February 2026 to work with the training provider.
The deadline for applications is 7 January 2026.
Funding for the programme comes from the UK Government via the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
