Three notable figures to receive honorary doctorates at Teesside University

Teesside University is set to honour a business leader, an academic, and a retired judge during its upcoming graduation ceremonies.

Teesside University will award honorary doctorates to Alastair MacColl, Professor Tony Unsworth, and His Honour Judge Leslie Spittle later this month. The awards will be presented during 13 ceremonies held on campus between 25 and 29 April.

These events mark the University’s first in-person graduations in nearly three years. More than 3,000 students from the classes of 2020 and 2021, who were unable to attend ceremonies due to pandemic restrictions, will finally cross the stage alongside the current cohort.

Alastair MacColl, former Chair of the University’s Board, will receive a Doctor of Business Administration for his contributions to the institution’s growth. Professor Tony Unsworth, a specialist in biomedical engineering and long-serving board member, will be awarded a Doctor of Engineering. Finally, Middlesbrough-born retired judge Leslie Spittle will be honoured with a Doctor of Laws for his legal career and his as a former university governor.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Croney OBE stated that the university is pleased to celebrate the achievements of its students and the contributions of its honorary graduates.
