Research team leading the way in COVID-19 treatment nationally – not once but twice

The research team at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has become the first in the UK to trial specific COVID-19 treatments on two separate occasions.

The team at North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust has achieved a national first by administering a new COVID-19 to a patient for the second time in a major research . The trust is currently the first in the country to treat a patient with dimethyl fumarate (DMF) as part of the national RECOVERY study.

DMF is typically used to manage relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis and is now being tested as a potential treatment for coronavirus patients. This follows the trust’s previous success in October, when it became the first in the UK to treat a patient with REGN-COV2 under the same study.

Ben Prudon, respiratory consultant and the trust’s study lead, the achievements to the dedication of hospital staff who engage with patients to explain the potential benefits of participating in trials.

The RECOVERY study involves 176 hospitals nationwide. The focuses on evaluating existing to determine their effectiveness against the virus, having previously identified the benefits of Dexamethasone for COVID-19 patients.
