A £5billion national scheme, titled Project Gigabit, is set to 40,000 properties across the Tees Valley. The project focuses on rural and hard-to-reach areas, aiming to increase connection speeds to 1,000 megabits per second.

The is designed to support the growth of the local tech and creative sectors by providing improved digital . According to the government, work is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2022.

In addition to the main rollout, a voucher scheme is being relaunched on 8 April 2021 to provide immediate financial assistance to rural residents and businesses. A further £110million has been nationally to support the connection of public services, including libraries and GP surgeries, located in remote areas.

Officials noted that the shift toward remote work and digital services during the pandemic has highlighted the necessity of fast broadband. The upgrade is intended to ensure that businesses and residents across Teesside, Darlington, and Hartlepool have access to the connectivity required for modern digital demands.
