The Gaming Hideaway, a gaming and virtual reality centre in Thornaby, has grown its team to 19 staff members within three months of opening. The business received a £10,000 through the Tees Valley Start Up Scale Up scheme to help fund initial recruitment and business development.
The centre focuses on educational development for young people using virtual reality software. It collaborates with local schools and colleges while hosting autism-friendly events and outreach programmes for underprivileged children.
Director Rachel Crooks stated that the funding allowed the business to grow more quickly than originally planned. The grant supported the appointment of a receptionist and a keyholder, both of whom are from the local area. Further hiring for managerial roles is planned for the coming year.
The Tees Valley Start Up Scale Up programme has paid out more than £500,000 to early-stage businesses to date. The scheme provides financial assistance based on job creation, offering up to £10,000 for new roles, alongside business planning support.
