Teesside University’s £13.2 million Student Life Building has been named the winner of the education category at the 2020 RICS Social Impact Awards for the North East. The accolade recognises the contribution the facility has made to the campus environment since its opening in January.

The building serves as a central hub for student services, including health and support, careers advice, and digital assistance. Its design focuses on removing barriers to support by co-locating services in a modern, collaborative space that encourages both social interaction and flexible learning.

The project also a commitment to community benefits during its construction, supporting 60 weeks of apprenticeships and 10 weeks of work experience. The facility has achieved BREEAM Excellent and Energy Performance Certificate A ratings for its environmental standards.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Croney highlighted that the building’s layout helped staff and students adapt to new ways of working during the recent health crisis. The building forms part of a wider £300 million investment programme for the Middlesbrough campus scheduled to continue until 2026.
