Plans to develop a major manufacturing hub at Teesworks have reached a key milestone following the approval of . The site, located on the former SSI steelworks in Redcar, is set to provide 4.5 million sq ft of manufacturing space designed to support the sector.
The project is expected to create 9,000 jobs, including 1,000 construction roles over an eight-year build programme. Remediation work is already underway on 430 acres of land alongside the River Tees, with the first tenants potentially moving into the space as early as 2022.
This development follows the recent proposal for a £90 million heavy-lifting quay, intended to provide international firms with direct shipping access. Once fully operational, the site is to add £180 million to the local economy annually.
The demolition phase of the project has already been completed, and current works on a 50-acre site near South Bank have generated an additional 30 jobs. Hall Construction, a local firm, was awarded the £4 million contract for this initial clearance.
Currently, 557 local people are working on the Teesworks site. The project, described as one of the largest planning applications in Northern England, aims to transform the former steelworks into a centre for clean energy manufacturing.
