A local chef who faced unemployment during the pandemic has successfully launched a new food business, supported by regional startup grants.

Chef James Tulley, 41, has established a new mobile dining business after finding himself without work when the pandemic began. His enterprise, Deja Food Truck, serves a changing menu of international cuisine to local doorsteps.

The startup was supported by a £1,500 from the Tees Valley Business Welcome Back Fund, a programme designed to assist with recovery and operational adaptation. This is part of a wider £35million managed by the to encourage local economic growth.

Mr Tulley, who has previously worked at the Michelin-starred Black Swan at Oldstead, manages the business alongside his family. The truck features a rotation of global dishes, ranging from Portuguese and Italian to South American inspirations.

Growth consultants from Tees Valley Business are currently providing the chef with advice to assist with future expansion. The business is now looking at securing permanent premises and developing its branding further.
